@snipejaeg @gannet @aldersprig @DialMforMara That is mostly correct; the $0.38 is going through Patreon, not directly to the payment processor, so it's not quite that transparent. But that's the idea.

@InspectorCaracal @gannet @aldersprig @DialMforMara Gotcha... I'm having split reactions, so I'm gonna have to think about this a bit.

@webmind The tl;dr version seems to be: legally speaking, they are a small nonprofit based in France who are funded via an account of their own on their own service and who distribute the funding to contributers to the open source codebase.

@InspectorCaracal nonprofit but not community owned, not bad. Kiva however is non profit, but got quite annoying anyhow. Always tricky to prevent that

@webmind @InspectorCaracal Only problem with LiberaPay is that they need at least 15E up front. Not good for US people that pay more, nor people that don't have the 15E to put up front.

@webmind @InspectorCaracal liberapay.com/about/faq

[To minimize processing fees, we charge your credit card at least €15.00 at a time (the money is stored in your Liberapay wallet and transferred to others during Payday).]

@Maverynthia @webmind @InspectorCaracal

Oh, I didn't use a creditcard for transaction
Those things are expensive.

@webmind @InspectorCaracal Unfortunately being in the US it's the only transaction I can use :<

@popefucker Patreon is pulling another Twitter. Started out a great service and receptive to its userbase, and now it's getting greedy and making increasingly poor decisions.

@raucao Ehh. Most companies absorb the fees as costs of business, not passing them down to the customer.

@InspectorCaracal What are you saying? Patreon is nothing but a transaction facilitator, and they don't make any other money. So they have to pay the fees to the payment network providers and add a little bit on top, which is all they earn. 30 cents per transaction is pretty much base fee for credit cards.

@InspectorCaracal What I'm saying is: the credit card companies as well as the banks are earning more money than Patreon, and the creator is left with the difference.

@raucao Oh, true, but that's not anything new, so it isn't really "welcome". <.<

@InspectorCaracal Now that they have enough users, they're starting to look for profit. And my point is that it's not even their fault for having to charge that much, but you're totally right that sugarcoating it is disingenuous. In fact, it'd be awesome if they added other payment options with less fees, like e.g. Litecoin, and actively worked on improving the earnings for both creators and themselves that way.

@raucao I'm saying pretty much exactly the words I said...?

@raucao The reason I felt the need to post this is because the marketing copy is highly disingenuous, not because transaction fees are new. >.>
