So there are many ways to do calenders... the most obvious ones are Lunar calenders, Solar calenders and Lunisolar calenders...
Artifexian has a good three video series on these (Solar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTeS2b2IAVY Lunar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3EPovK2-Uw and Lunisolar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7pHeFtQDpM )
Guess who doesn't want to do any of these... or at least not exactly...
#WorldBuildingWednesday So what I want to do is instead of having a lunisolar calender I want this conculture to have seperate lunar and solar calenders that work hand in hand
The solar calender starts on the winter solstice of the hemisphere the conculture lives in and rather than having months is divided into 8 seasons
Days are counted from the Winter Solstice until they pass the point where the Spring equinox is close at which point they start counting down to the Spring Equinox and so on
#WorldBuildingWednesday the Lunar Calender has its New Year fall on the first full moon that falls on or after the Winter Solstice and every month thereafter starts on the full moon - which means the length of a lunar year varies quite a bit but that doesn't bother them.
This also means that the conworld's metonic cycle (which will likely be 19 years just like on Earth because I'm lazy) is very important to the conculture. Rather than decades and centuries they group years multiples of 19...
#WorldBuildingWednesday and a child is considered to have reached adulthood when the solar and lunar anniversaries of their naming feast (which is what they celebrate rather than birthays) coincide again (ie when they are 19)
This is what I have so far.
@Shutsumon I like having the anniversaries coincide being the adulthood festival.
@Shutsumon What's metonic?
@aldersprig Ah, that's a good question. Let me quote wikipedia as it can explain it better than me.
The metonic cycle is "a period of an almost exactly 19 years that is nearly a common multiple of the solar year and the synodic (lunar) month" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metonic_cycle
It's named after an Ancient Greek dude named Meton
@Shutsumon Ah, Ancient Greek Dudes.
@Shutsumon Also, interesting!
@Shutsumon i don't have the brain to parse videos right now but i'm curious: do the Lunar and Lunisolar calendar videos act under the terra-centric assumption that there is only one moon?
@InspectorCaracal nope, in the lunar one in particular he talks about multiple moons
i might bookmark it to look at on a rare occasion that i can parse explanatory videos, that sounds interesting
