Dear Fellow Anglophones,
People are allowed to speak their own language in public. We do not own the internet.
I repeat:
WE DO NOT OWN THE INTERNET.
Sheesh!
Dear Francophones (and other non-anglophones)
I'd say "feel free to carry on" but you don't need my permission.
I am sorry people are jerks though.
@frankiesaxx @Shutsumon Anglophone USians insisting on living monolingually has been the worst thing for me mostly because I shift in and out of various languages all the time. Also makes teaching students a second language that much more difficult.
@Shutsumon J'ai commencé à parler en français spécialement pour irriter les anglophones.
But yeah, that's getting really annoying
@Shutsumon French people aren't allowed on the internet. Where did you get the idea that they are? :V
@Shutsumon is this something people are actually saying? :slight_frown:
@Shutsumon I think some people just want some language controls. Like have it so your toots are marked as being in a specific language so users can then choose to filter them out should they wish. Until then, what can you do but mute?
@Shutsumon :P we are joking. we are not actually hating on them so much as teasing that a lot of the early wave as french channers here to post racist memes and harass us.
@Shutsumon but like, the rest are not that. and idk i think most of them are in on the joke cuz they are also making jokes about us anglophones which are are boosting
@Shutsumon *which us anglophones making the francophone jokes are also boosting because they are funny. at least where i am it's in good humor on both ends
@shel I was subtooting someone who was earnestly requesting Francophones make their toots unlisted
@Shutsumon gross! gross! fuck that person!
@Shutsumon i'm not gonna tell anybody what language to speak but i am gonna mute non-anglophones, it's a little frustrating to dig through content I can't read.
@Shutsumon I keep seeing toots to this affect, and I'm almost afraid to ask what braindead drama made people feel they were necessary.
At the same time...morbid curiosity persists.
@Shutsumon As an addendum, I'll note that the only issue I've had with non-English posts, personally, is that I had to use Stylish to strongarm Mastodon into using a more UTF-8 robust font in chromium on Gentoo, which was pretty annoying. Before that, many characters not in the ASCII set for English language were not rendering correctly.
I'll file a bug if/when I figure out whether this was a Mastodon problem or a chromium one.
@Shutsumon wtf? people were doing this shit on this site? sigh...
@Shutsumon I've seen substantially more people complaining about this than I've seen people actually complaining about the use of other languages.
@Shutsumon
we are having that SAME discussion over here.
