The back yard was a mess.

We had looked at, CONSIDERED, worse houses. But the front was beautiful, & the bones of the house were amazing.

The bones of the backyard were more literal: 3/4 of a broken Pinto. A pile of what I was PRETTY sure were animal bones. A Barbie doll - no, 4 of them - strung into a mobile in a tree.

"Did - did a serial killer live here?" Wes asked.

I , however, was staring at the black cat sitting in the weedy remains of a garden.

"This is the one."
